Dodgers start out 2013 season with ups and downs

The Dodgers return home Monday, April 15th for not your typical early season series. The Padres, struggling again this season, aren't the most exciting team in the world and normally don't garner that much early season attention. With a 2-9 record this season has the look of another lost season in San Diego. Of course this was all before Carlos Quentin decided to charge the mound and break Zach Grienke's collarbone. Now the Dodgers/Padres three-game series at Chavez Ravine will receive national coverage. Mr. Quentin won't be on hand to see his team take on the Dodgers as he begins serving his eight-game suspension.

With Grienke now on the shelf for as long as two months, the Dodgers will need Chris Capuano to step into the rotation and provide solid innings. They'll also need the offense to provide some more protection. Lost in the Dodgers 7-5 record is their poor offensive performance thus far. They are currently twenty-sixth in runs scored and half scored fewer than half as many runs as the A's and Mets who lead major league baseball. After a difficult 1-0 loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday the Dodgers are now averaging less than less than three runs per game. They are where they're at largely due to solid starting pitching and a dominating performance by the bullpen. The combination of Kenley Jansen, JP Howell, Ronald Belisario and Brandon League have effectively shut the door on the opponents they've faced, doing a masterful job shortening games and protecting leads.

Lost in the excitement over the Padres/Dodgers brawl was another solid week by the Dodgers. They took two of three from the Padres, battling back to take the series after a difficult lose, and outing by Josh Beckett, in the Padres home opener. In taking the final two games of the series versus San Diego the Dodgers received solid starting pitching efforts by Chad Billingsley and Grienke, as well as a yet another series of solid bullpen performances. Offensively with Matt Kemp still struggling at the plate Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford have helped carry the team. Both Crawford and Gonzales are hitting upwards of .375 with Gonzalez leading the club in runs batted in and Crawford setting the table from the leadoff position. What could have been a series victory versus the Diamondbacks on Sunday ended with a tough 1-0 walk-off loss and a wasted pitching performance by Josh Beckett. The Dodgers offense, specifically Matt Kemp, looked overmatched by Trevor Cahill and his power-sinker.

You can't solely rely on solid pitching to win baseball games so the Dodgers will have to get their bats going. With Matt Kemp scuffling and Hanley Ramirez on the DL for at least another month Don Mattingly and Mark McGwire will have to find some offense from sources other than Gonzalez and Crawford. Matt Kemp is a superstar so won't struggle for ever and has the ability to carry the team himself for stretches. If Kemp can get on track, and if some of the other key parts can produce (Andre Ethier) the Dodgers should be able to up their run production soon.

The Padres series should be a wonderful opportunity for the Dodgers to win a series prior to heading out on the road for a three-game series next weekend in Baltimore. The Orioles have one of the top young teams in the game and are coming off of a playoff appearance last season. Their bats will be another tough test for the Dodgers staff.
